Delueze's Bacon

Gilles Deleuze extracts a logic of sensation from Francis Bacon’s works.  Just as Heidegger extracted a literate metaphysics from Greek philosophy, we may overlay his method onto Deleuze to map out a new metaphysics.

We must remember that Deleuze’s Bacon acts as our analogy; we are trying to find what Bacon is doing with his painting and how this will be helpful for us in creating an image metaphysics.

The logic of sensation is an affectual understanding of the world.  We already have, in the literate tradition, cognitive methods for relating to the world, but Deleuze’s Bacon shows us how to create an affectual relationship—how to understand the world through the filter of aesthetics.

Bacon expresses the unintelligible. What is this other type of relationship, a relationship between coupled or distinct Figures? Let us call these new relationships matters of fact, as opposed to intelligible relations (of objects or ideas). (7)
