The greatest "success" of capitalism is its rapacious capacity to occupy and exploit space – space that should be open and available for individuals to move through without limitation. The spaces of the Global City are – must be – open spaces. But is the space really open to being occupied without at the same time being taken? With capitalism driving the Global City harder, isnt there a danger of becoming entirely immersed in immediate urgency of the moment? Who today insists that the City retains open spaces that remain hospitable?
