It might be said that the flâneur (see Benjamin, Charles Baudelaire, 1973, pp 35-54), Sontag’s connoisseur and reconnoitrer, and the tourist share a common connection in their relationship with the City. The compulsion to explore the City is often driven by a fascination with the Other and the stimulation they create. Perhaps underpinned by an impulse to hunt and conquer, that initial desire to capture difference in the city can become converted – in the Global City – as exotic unfamiliar spaces become home-like and familiar – places to inhabit.
