Yet over and above the brutal oppression that people experienced under the Communists, there was a solemnity created by Berlin's Wall of silence. This solemn empty space finally freed some people's minds and souls to propagate the flowers of their inner being, connecting as they did, with the foundations of the human spirit. While the Communists never imagined they were feeding the monster that would eventually devour them, they nevertheless had the sense to recognise, if only reluctantly, that their time had come and gone.
