In spite of Communism's ideal of providing shelter for all people, the blankets of forced silences and empty spaces it created only spawned pools of disenchantment and resistance. The authorities could not stop "the chimes of Freedom" and "odes to Joy" from permeating through their walls. Capturing heart and mind with dream-like phantasmagoria, the ghost of the West slowly took shape on the warming hearth of East Berlin's modest living rooms. With nothing more substantial than salacious promises and promiscuous desire, such phantoms and Pied Pipers gained easy refuge in the sanctity of people's hearts, that alienated Lebensraum in the East.
