The general effect [of the ideal drawing room] should be restful, even, and devoid of any startling distractions by way of ornament...it wants judgement, well-considered care, a reverent taste, a nice sense of colour, and a knowledge of what goes with what...However precious a thing may be in itself, however notable as a work of art, it must be ruthlessly banished if it spoils the picture.
