For Deleuze and Guattari, the face is a writing surface. No mere metaphor, this idea implies that faces or facialization is foundational to all signification. Face is the writing surface. And indeed, in the end of their exploration of faciality in A Thousand Plateaus, they come to terms with the face as that which one must submit to, as if the face were analogous to language as theorized by Lacan.
